Throughout its history, the West Coast fishing industry has helped fuel the
economy and enrich the social fabric of British Columbia. The Gulf of
Georgia Cannery was built in 1894, one of nearly fifty canneries operating
at that time on the Fraser River between Steveston and New Westminster.
This vibrant maritime heritage is justly celebrated in Steveston, which was,
and remains, an important center of the West Coast fishing industry.
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is now a National Historic Site owned by
Parks Canada and operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society.
